LANSING – State Representative Andrew Kandrevas (D-Southgate) today announced he has been appointed Chair of the Subcommittee on Corrections Reform.
"As somebody who has worked as both a prosecutor and criminal defense attorney, I know the shortcomings of the current system," Kandrevas said. "There are new technologies and acceptable alternatives to incarceration that we should look to expand if possible."
The Corrections Reform Subcommittee is charged with holding hearings and workgroups to develop legislation that will reform the corrections system. The committee will seek solutions to restore balance between Michigan's duties to incarcerate, punish and rehabilitate those who break our laws and the need to exercise fiscal responsibility while carrying out those duties. Kandrevas will work with the Chair of the Corrections Subcommittee on Appropriations to achieve these goals.
"We will continue to keep dangerous criminals behind bars, but we need to look at options to help our state financially while revamping this system," Kandrevas said. "In these tough economic times, changes have to be made to cut costs and streamline government in order to begin turning our state around. Keeping our residents safe will be my top priority in any decision I make as Chair of this subcommittee."
