LANSING – State Representatives Mark Meadows (D-East Lansing) and Andrew Kandrevas (D-Southgate) today announced that the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Corrections Reform will hold a hearing on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 10:30 a.m. to discuss the potential impact of bringing prisoners from other states and detainees from Guantanamo Bay to Michigan. Kandrevas will chair the panel, which was convened at a request from Meadows.
"I asked the subcommittee to hold a hearing on these potential prisoner transfers because of the lack of accurate information available to answer public questions about the transfers," said Meadows, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee. "The forum is an opportunity for the executive branch to update impacted communities on the status of negotiations and for them to hear from local government leaders."
Scheduled to give testimony at the hearing are State Representatives Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City), Joel Sheltrown (D-West Branch) and Tim Moore (R-Farwell); Mike Moran III, Standish City Manager; Joseph Sancimino, Arenac County Commissioner; Curt Hillman, Standish Township Supervisor; Jerry Nelson, Mayor Pro Tem of Standish; and Dave Munson, a Standish businessman.
"With the recent prison closings and loss of jobs in affected communities, it's important that we get all the facts so that our state can make an informed decision," Kandrevas said. "These bipartisan hearings will give residents an opportunity to have their voice heard as we move forward and search for ways to reform our corrections system."
